A flat grind, also known as a full flat grind, features a blade with sides that taper straight from the spine to the cutting edge. This grind offers a balance between sharpness and strength, making it versatile. It’s commonly found in chef’s knives and general-purpose outdoor knives. A flat grind is ideal for slicing and general cutting tasks but may be better for heavy chopping due to its thinner edge.

Hollow Grind

A hollow grind has a concave surface, creating a fragile and sharp edge. This grind is achieved by grinding a concave radius into the blade. Hollow grinds are common in straight razors, skinning knives, and other cutting tools where precision and sharpness are paramount. However, the thin edge can be fragile and unsuitable for tasks requiring a more robust blade.

Convex Grind

Chisel Grind

Sabre Grind

Like a flat grind, a saber grind (or saber grind) only tapers partway down the blade, starting from the spine to mid-way down. This creates a thicker edge suitable for heavy-duty tasks like chopping and batoning. It’s an everyday grind in survival knives and some hunting knives. The saber grind sacrifices some sharpness for increased strength and edge stability.

Compound Grind

A compound grind combines two or more different grinds on the same blade. For example, a knife may feature a flat grind near the handle for strength and a hollow grind towards the tip for sharpness. This type of grind aims to optimize the blade for multiple tasks. It’s more complex to manufacture and is found in specialized or custom knives.

For outdoor activities like camping or bushcraft, a Scandi or convex grind may be more appropriate due to their strength and ease of maintenance.
